Chinese company Vivo presented a new V9. We tested it and offer you a review of the smartphone. At once I will tell that it in many respects reminds earlier presented Vivo V7 +, you about it can read on our site. But this is only at first glance if you dig and compare characteristics, it turns out that Vivo V9 still stands a step higher. And what is better? Let’s quickly tell.
What is in the box
Charger, cable, headset and silicone case.
Cheholchik with a plug for charging in place of micro USB, in my opinion, it only interferes. It is more convenient when it is not, but this is subjective. Perhaps someone will even like the case by the fact that the cap protects the connector from dust – you can look at the problem in different ways.
Front is good, behind – not very good
Somewhere we have already seen it, and here again. The first thing that catches your eye when you look at the Vivo V9 is the “bangs” at the top of the screen. It seemed that the trend of 2018 will be frameless smartphones. In fact, the most fashionable yet just “bangs”, which in fact – the ledge with a speaker and a front camera.
You can argue how correctly to imitate the iPhone X, but against the background of faceless “shovels” on Android with widescreen screens, this move is still working. Another thing is that the owners of the “bangs” are already becoming so much (especially among the “Chinese”) that they become impersonal “shovels.” Only with the “bangs”.
The back panel is less interesting – entirely made of plastic with a glossy surface. The rays of the sun on her poured pretty, but not for long. Covering with a solid all-around fingerprint of a high aesthetics do not contribute at all. You can protect your smartphone with a cover. Appearance V9 will not get any worse.
Vivo V9 is a great smartphone. The diagonal of the screen in 6.3 inches is obligatory. You can not reach the volume and volume buttons.
To the fingerprint scanner located on the back panel, you need to get used to it. He is buried deep in the body only a little bit and there really is no frame around. To find it on the first try is not always. But it works very quickly.
Still, there is a possibility of unlocking the face. The smartphone does it swiftly, but the way by definition is less secure. A smart three-dimensional face map does not create automatic, so it can be easily deceived by photography. In general, the story is more about convenience and fashion than about the preservation of personal data.
Design and Convenience
The same minimal frames (in our case – 1.75 mm), the protruding island under the front camera and, of course, the maximum similarity of the original shell with iOS.
I do not know how the company that makes such devices as Vivo APEX allows himself to copy one of the competitors so brazenly. Apparently, in China it’s fashionable – the more your smartphone is similar to the iPhone, the better, the higher the sales.
A huge display with almost no borders adds to the enthusiasm. Definitely!
The minimum thickness of the body is added to the fire of the positive – 7.89 mm. Not a record, but with a slightly sloping backrest, the thickness of the smartphone seems to dissolve in the hand. It’s great!
The impression from the front side spoils only one fact – the film on the screen. Yes, it is qualitative, it has something like an oleophobic coating, but its edges are very sharp, do not repeat the rounding of Corning Gorilla Glass, so the whole pleasant effect of 2.5D edges is spoiled.
If you want to make a svayp from the bottom edge of the display (a standard system control gesture), then the finger rests against the sharp edge of the film, and to complete the gesture, you need to apply a little more effort to the gesture. In general, the management of oil as it is not called.
Of course, I decided to remove the protective film, but then I was waiting for a surprise. Unpleasant.
Owners of Vivo V9 have no such choice. Not the most successful and spoiling experience of using the film, in any case, should not be removed.
We unfold the smart phone with its back.
Behind the device looks very simple. Two small cameras, a fingerprint scanner, thin, shiny stripes that mimic cutouts for antennas.
Despite the huge screen (6.3 inches), the smartphone is convenient to use. And all because the aspect ratio is 19 to 9, that is, the display is very extended in height. Thanks to this, we have an IPS-panel on which much more information is placed in any orientation. And watching movies on this screen is a special pleasure. Minus only one – the YouTube app does not yet know how to stretch the content to the full screen. The question is temporary.
If you save in V7 on the display, then there is not. The resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels (Full HD +) in view of such a large diagonal gives us a very comfortable pixel density of 400 ppi.
The framework on the three sides is really minimal – 1.75 mm. But the chin can not boast of this, because its width is 6 mm. On the one hand, it’s a bit too much, but on the other, against the background of such a hefty display, such a wide band is simply lost.
Behind us, we have a double module, which is intended only for blurring the background. Double or some other “optical” zoom is not here. Only digital.
The device does quite interesting bokeh if you look only on the smartphone screen. Download the photo on the computer and on the big screen we see the carelessness of the algorithms of the device.
The main complaint is that the device cuts too sharply the object in the foreground of the background. It seems that a person was cut from one photo and inserted on another, washed out. Not very natural.
Algorithms are treated with care. Part neatly, and some left in a sharp field. However, sometimes shoals occur, as, for example, in this photo.
It’s good that the degree of blur can be adjusted from the minimum value to the barely discernible objects in the background. And, you can do it after taking photos, in the Gallery.
HDR works well, but up to Super HDR (Vivo’s own technology) is still far from the smartphone, however, nobody announced it for V9. Complex scenes, for example, shooting against the light is given to the smartphone heavily – the dark sections of the frames it still does not stretch. But the sky remains naturally blue, with clouds and all the rest.
I did not like the work of the smartphone with the exposure. By default, the camera will pick up the exposure above the present, resulting in the image formed overexposed areas. It is necessary every time after focusing on any object slightly twist the brightness slider down. Below a couple of just such examples: the left is shot on the machine, and on the right photo, I manually lowered the exposure.
In general, Vivo V9 photographs well. However, he is far from the flagship level.
[supsystic-gallery id=6 position=center]
The device boasts 4K video at 30 frames per second. The video does not represent anything outstanding: the picture is not full of detail, and stabilization does not work well. Rather, there is no stabilization at all.
But, if taken as a whole, it will come down.
In our case, this is gesture management and unlocking the smartphone in the face. The latter works surprisingly well. In difficult conditions, when there is little light, or even when wearing sunglasses, the smartphone is unlocked. You just have to be patient for a couple of seconds. For those who are important speed always and everywhere, there is a fingerprint scanner on the back of the device. Fortunately, it works lightning fast and without errors.
But the gestures I did not really like. In general, everything is fine, only one recognition is lame: the multitasking window. Here’s how it’s done.
The gesture is recognized once or twice. From the bottom edge of the display, hold your finger to the center and hold it. Either we turn off the application and go to the working screen, or the list of multitasking is opened, but it is necessary to remove the finger, it disappears. Try again – it did not work. Once again, and this time it worked as it should.
The smartphone retained a nice feature, like the Vivo V7 +, Vivo V9 supports simultaneous operation with two SIM cards and a memory card. All good fits in one big tray, you do not have to sacrifice.
The Vivo V9 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 626 processor, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of its own. Old percent of furrow will not spoil, 90 thousand in AnTuTu – the result is good. All games go, but I love arcades, and there usually do not have problems with graphics and on simpler devices.
A memory card can be put, for it a separate slot in a removable tray is allocated, very conveniently. Well, a few words about the battery. The battery for 3260 mAh is charged via microUSB, fast charging, unfortunately, no. I had enough charge from morning till evening, the phone worked for about a day, it was not enough for two days of using it.
Complete the headset is not intended for anything other than the similarity with EarPods from Apple – the same uncomfortable, falling out of the ears and the mediocre in terms of sound headphones
We put in the ears that are more serious (AKG N30, as an option) and the sound becomes 10 times more interesting.
The external speaker here is one – located at the bottom, next to the Micro USB port. The volume is higher than average, lower in quality.
There is a headphone jack and a separate memory card slot
Great news for those who are not ready to abandon the usual slots and connectors. In Vivo V9, you expect the familiar Micro-USB connector for charging the smartphone and connecting to a PC and a 3.5 mm output for wired headphones. Both are located at the bottom end, where there is one speaker and microphone.
The second good news – in Vivo V9 you can simultaneously install two SIM-cards and an additional memory card. In the era of enthusiasm for manufacturers of combined slots, this is encouraging.
Vivo recognition system in Vivo works clearly
In Vivo V9, three options for unlocking the device are implemented: a password, a fingerprint reader (built into the back cover), and a face detection (Face Access). In the standby mode, the fingerprint scanner immediately reacts to touch.
But if the hands are wearing gloves, it’s easier and faster to press the power button of the device, look at the self-camera, and the smartphone will almost instantly establish a portrait resemblance to the owner.
Calibrating the face of the Vivo V9 intakes up half the time than adding a fingerprint. But, unlike prints, the database can store the appearance of only one owner.
In conditions of good illumination, the Face ID system works quite clearly and exhibits the makings of the intellect. There were no false positives at all. You can not cheat the gadget by presenting the self from the tablet.
In this case, the smartphone in 7 out of 10 attempts will recognize you in a hat, glasses or sunglasses. But, alas, only individually. In the cap and glasses, access to the device is closed. I’ll have to shoot something myself.
Despite a fairly smart platform, performance is lame. The shell continually slows down, and in third-party applications, it is noticeably more. Instagram Skype, mail from Yandex are the most obvious troublemakers.
In general, this behavior is strange. After all, the previous processor (Snapdragon 625) was famous for its trouble-free operation, and in the novelty (626th snape) the frequency was raised even higher, therefore, there can be no claims to the hardware. We will write down all the flaws in the not completely optimized shell.
However, we keep in mind that the device is very, very fresh, so be sure to make a discount. Most likely, the roughness is still dopily.
In powerful and modern toys on the smartphone, you can play except on average graphics parameters. Reproduction of the same 4K video does not slow down. Hence the conclusion – we have a confident middle peasant, but without claims for something more.
To begin with, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, is supported by two bands, which is already a vital necessity. The version of Bluetooth 4.2, there are no special flaws. USB 2.0 version (micro USB connector), USB OTG supported.
The work of GPS is average (this is typical for OPPO / Vivo in general), in the pedestrian navigation mode and Google Maps, there were situations when the point itself moved to neighboring streets. It did not hurt, but it’s difficult to name the GPS antenna work, it has rough edges.
Given that the traditionally weak point in the OPPO / Vivo is the implementation of antennas for LTE, I was interested to compare how this device shows itself in practice. I tried this as follows: I took the SIM-card MTS and in the same places inserted it sequentially in the Galaxy S9, Honor 7x and Vivo V9. Since the aggregation of frequencies in the MTS is not available for those ranges that are present in the apparatus, the comparison is as clear as possible.
And here’s what happened: Vivo’s data transfer speed is almost always lower than in Honor 7X, and they both lose Galaxy S9 (Exynos version). The conclusion is simple – it’s not enough to put Qualcomm chipset and their LTE-modem, it’s important that the manufacturer correctly places and tunes the antennas.

Should you buy Vivo V9 or not
Despite the mentioned shortcomings, VIVO as a whole left a positive impression. It can be described as a cheerful smartphone, oriented for those who are looking primarily for entertainment – in games, in creating funny selfies and so on. If you are from such people – Vivo V9 you just like it.
What I did not like about Vivo V9
Silicone case spoils everything
The smartphone itself looks quite neutral. The device looks compact enough for its overall dimensions (155 x 75 x 8 mm) and also has a lightweight (150 grams) and excellent build quality.
But you should wear a Vivo V9 silicone bumper cover, which comes complete, as the impression spoils. In the case, the smartphone resembles a remote control hidden in the cellophane from the TV, and ergonomics suffer. The control keys on the right are covered for some reason tightly, and the cable connector hides behind the “door” – a removable plug that always tries to open.
Without the case, the device fits comfortably in the hand. The lid leaves pleasant tactile sensations. The only niggling – the fingers stumble on the step between the body and the glass of the screen projecting above it with different radii of a fillet.
In addition to the capacity of the Li-Ion battery in 3260 mAh, the manufacturer does not give any data on the operating time. In practice, the apparatus behaves as expected. So, with 3-3.5 hours of screen work, it is quite capable of lasting from 9 am to 8 pm, that is, almost a full day. For those who do not use the smartphone non-stop and thrifty, it will be available for 2 days. Battery charging time is about 3.5 hours. Typical indicators that can not be called bad or good, they coincide with classmates and are not knocked out of average values. The lack of fast charging is a fatty minus (5 V / 2 A charging is included).
Autonomy above average
The wisdom of autonomy Vivo V9 does not show, but it works a little longer than some competitors. In the mixed mode of use – a standard day from morning to evening, and in the monotheist figures are interesting. For example, a simple arcade Subway Surfers phone without a break twisted for more than 5 hours in a row. In the Full HD video playback mode, the gadget lasted 8.5 hours at maximum brightness.
It’s a pity that the developers forgot about fast charging. For an hour of power from the outlet, the V9 only gets 56%, while the competitors for the same period of time sometimes have time to recharge from 70-75 or even 90%. At the same time, the connector on the phone for some reason is old: MicroUSB instead of the replaced Type-C. Well, to fully charge the battery with a capacity of 3260 mAh takes more than two hours
Vivo V9 costs 23,990 rubles and it’s very expensive for a smartphone with Snapdragon 626, no NFC, USB Type-C and fast charging, and the case is made of plastic. Yes, there’s a big screen and a trendy “bang”, for some buyers it’s important, but if you compare a smartphone with analogs, then it’s easy to pick up an alternative for the same money. Yes, without this “cutout”, but with more interesting characteristics.

The smartphone is pleased with exactly two things. The first is the screen. Yes, as in the iPhone X, yes there is a cutout for the front camera, but on the other hand, now this trend and nothing here you can not perish. In any case, you take Vivo V9 and you know – the smartphone looks great in your hand, it’s convenient to use, and the screen with minimal frames pleases the eye.
The second is autonomy. With such a modest battery, you do not expect a confident day and a half of autonomy. However, two full days – this is an easily achievable result if you take advantage of some regular mode of energy-saving.
As in any other, even in the most expensive device, Vivo V9 has its drawbacks. For example, I was not impressed with double cameras. Yes, the quality of the photo and background blur are generally quite good, but in 2018 this is for everyone and in order to plug competitors into the belt, this is not enough.
I really did not like the absence of the oleophobic coating. Perhaps this is the most critical drawback. It is possible, of course, to use a regular film, but what to do when it becomes unfit for use? Either shoot it and use the device as it is or buys a new one
