Touch displays have a lot of advantages and also have some drawbacks. For example, smartphones and tablets it is very difficult to use in the cold with gloves on – except for those devices which support the “In gloves” mode. Touch displays are convenient while driving a car, however, they need to reach out a hand, which increases the risk of an accident. It seems Samsung has figured out how to solve both problems.
The company filed a patent application for a new way of controlling devices using gestures in the air. We can it without having to touch the surface of the screens. The essence of the technology lies in the motion sensor, which captures gestures and activates a special mode of “Proximity UI Mode”.
According to the idea of the company. The hand movements up, down, left and right will scroll and flip pages. Covering the screen with a palm and opening it will allow turning the display on and off. Short-term approach and distance of the hand will be understood by the interface as pressing.
The development of this technology can take more than ten years. A member of the branch team PrimeSense invented the same control method for personal computers. The development will allow to navigate and to confirm actions using gestures in the air.
Will the new technology be used in future Samsung devices, is still unknown. The company has many patents that still have not been used.
