New York Times (NYT) has long been enthusiastically introducing immersive technologies into its publications, such as augmented reality. The newspaper uses AR to attract and better inform its readers about various events: the mission of NASA to Mars, the volcanic eruption Volcan de Fuego in Guatemala, the rescue operation in the cave Tam Luang, etc.
Now the New York Times has shifted to what, in the opinion of its leadership, is the next phase of the visual narrative. The newspaper began to use in its publications moving 3D images of real people.
The first article of The New York Times using this technology is devoted to the New York Fashion Week. The model and activist Ashley Graham was invited, which was filmed more than 100 cameras to capture images. Then these images were combined to create a moving three-dimensional Graham hologram, which can be viewed as if it were in the same room as the viewer (for more details on the process of filming, see here ).
“The Times chose Ashley Graham for this role because of her approach to the positive image of the body. She frankly says that she does not correct her body image or face shape, although this practice is a common phenomenon in the fashion industry, “said Joanna Nikas, editor of The New York Times.

AR experience was created using Microsoft technology in Metastage Capture Studio in California. The technology used to create the effect was built directly into the NYT application for iOS.
Ashley Graham stands up sharply against the “photographed” ideal images that media feed people daily. The American “plus-size” model believes that a constant lie in magazines and social networks especially affects children who see around only perfect models and actors and begin to hate themselves and their body.
