At the last presentation, Apple showed three new models of the iPhone. iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR have a degree of protection IP68, which will allow smartphones to dive into the water to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 min. Also, the company claims that the glass of new devices is the strongest on the smartphone market. The patent application filed by Apple in the US patent office in March 2017 indicates that the company has developed a wear-resistant coating that will protect the device from dents and scratches.
The patent application mentions a rigid outer layer with an intermediate layer between the metal substrate and the outer coating. The intermediate layer is probably made of a ceramic material. The thickness of the outer, harder layer is approximately 0.5 μm to 3 μm, and the intermediate layer is from 8 to 30 μm.
Apple’s patent application is called “Resistant to wear coatings on metal housings.” According to the document, the new coating will provide improved resistance to wear and dent formation.
