Today in California San Jose, the annual conference for developers of Apple WWDC 2018 began. As the insiders assumed, we did not see any hardware on that day, the emphasis was on the software and in particular on the operating system for iPhone and iPad – iOS 12.
Apple vice president for software development Craig Federigi said that 81% of compatible devices are running on iOS 11, while, according to Apple, 95% of users are satisfied with this operating system. The nice thing was that Apple decided not to shorten the list of devices that will support iOS 12, the list is the same as for iOS 11, and this is all the company’s devices since 2013. All smartphones from the iPhone 5S to the iPhone X, tablets from the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 to the most current models, as well as iPod Touch sixth generation will be updated to the new version of the operating system.
iOS 12 – the main speed!
Apple in the face of Craig Federigi promised that the new iOS 12, even on older devices will work very quickly. Opening applications will accelerate by 40%, work with the keyboard by 50%, and work with the camera by 70%. In general, the new version of the OS focuses on speed, stability and AR.
Even more AR
Apple has traditionally focused on augmented reality. According to the application company, AR is becoming more and more, for example, Apple showed its own program Measure, which allows you to measure any object in augmented reality. Also, the company together with Pixar has developed and announced a new format of documents for AR – USDZ. This is an open format for developers, which will allow you to share files of augmented reality. The new file format will support applications from companies Autodesk Quixe, Ascethfab and of course Adobe.
New Animoji and Memoji
There were new animated emoticons of the koala, ghost, tiger and tyrannosaur, and now “Animoji” recognize the movement of the tongue. But the main thing is that there are custom emoji in the new OS. The user will be able to turn himself into an animated smiley. Samsung has something similar in their Galaxy S9.
Every day we get hundreds of different notifications, all this can be very distracting, and at some point even badly affect us, so iOS 12 will have an advanced system of “Do Not Disturb.” You can turn off notifications from certain applications, you can do it for a specific time or forever. In this case, Siri will keep track of obsessive applications and will suggest disabling the push from them. During sleep, notifications will be turned off at all, so as not to disturb or wake you up. In the morning, all notifications will appear, apparently the schedule will be configured separately. Finally, notifications are now grouped! The things that everyone has been waiting for from iOS have finally appeared.
Following Android P in iOS 12 will also appear a separate application that will monitor how much and what programs you use. The application is called Screen Time and it will allow you to control the time spent in different programs. Especially it is convenient in the case of children, you can set a certain time for Instagram, after which the system will offer to close the program and will not allow it to be used any further.
The firm application “Photo” has also been updated. Now it will remind you of the photos you took that day years ago, improved the function of “Memories”. Also, the app will even better recognize people in the photo and offer to send pictures to your friends who are captured in the photos. Most of these innovations may be familiar to you on Google Photo.
Siri, according to Craig Federigi is the most popular voice assistant in the world, so it was a little pumped up by adding support for shortcuts. Shortcuts allow you to activate a set of actions with a single request to the assistant. For example, you can tell Siri a good night and she will turn on the alarm clock and the “Do Not Disturb” mode. In the voice assistant settings, you can create your own shortcuts. Also, Siri will learn how to work with even more applications, for this, developers will give their own shortcuts that will allow them to integrate simple queries into the assistant. For example, in the case of the Tile key fob, you can tell the assistant “I lost the keys” and Siri will turn on the key fob so that you can find your keys.
Apple Books (iBooks)
A branded application for reading books has changed its name, now it’s not iBooks, but Apple Books. There is a function “I’m reading now”, which allows the user to continue reading from an interrupted moment on another device. In Apple Books appeared a separate section for audiobooks, and the store became more convenient and it’s easier to look for new items. However, Apple Books is still not very relevant for Russian-speaking countries, although in itself this reading room is one of the best that is on the market. In addition to iBooks, the Dictaphone, News and CarPlay application was seriously updated. In the latter, support for third-party maps will appear.
Now FaceTime supports group calls, in which up to 32 people can participate. In this case, in FaceTime work Animoji and Memoji, callers can in real time “put on” the face mask as an animated smiley.
