It’s very difficult to talk about sound, and it’s not particularly grateful, because you have to listen to the sound. For each person, the choice of headphones is quite an emotional decision. The same headphones for two different people can be nasty and pleasant at the same time. But there are in our time devices of a universal nature. Wireless headphones with noise reduction Sony WH-1000XM2 are one of those. In addition to balanced sound, Sony offers a few more chips that translate the concept of sound quality into a new plane. This is exactly what our review of the Sony WH-1000XM2 will look like.
Active Noise Reduction
To begin with, the WH-1000XM2 is equipped with active noise reduction technology. Its main task is to organize complete silence. At first, it strains the vestibular apparatus a little and a feeling of lostness in space appears. But it goes on literally in a moment, and then there is music enjoyment in complete silence. We talked about noise reduction in the review of Bose QC35. But Sony would not be Sony if they did not cut the noise smart. This is expressed in the ability of the technology to adapt to ambient noise and automatically determine whether you are flying, flying or driving.
In the proprietary Sony Headphones Connect application, you can very fine-tune the noise reduction or give free rein to digital brains that are able to decide for themselves whether to skip noise or not. For example, this is important for jogging, when you need to hear what is happening behind your back, so as not to get into an unpleasant situation. On the Sony WH-1000XM2 plane, determine the pressure level and adjust the noise level to the actual conditions. If the Bose QC35 noise reduction is just good, then in Sony it is also very smart and much more flexible. Noise-canceling headphones from Sony allow you to hear what’s happening outside when it’s really necessary. But the question is, will these be used by all because the simpler the technology and the less it requires intervention, the more convenient it is.
It is not necessary to be an audiophile esthete to distinguish a mediocre sound from a good one. Another thing is that personal preferences in sound, it’s like eating: something like something, but something not. Sony WH-1000XM2 sounds good and it’s a fact! The sound is very balanced. There is no pronounced high frequency or middle, except that the bass is felt a little more clearly. But it’s not a vulgar rattling bottom, but a pleasant and voluminous sound.
But if you open a proprietary application, then the sound of these headphones can be made even better by fitting it with a built-in equalizer. In general, a proprietary application allows a lot, especially if you have a Sony smartphone with LDAC codec support. This codec allows you to send a Bluetooth sound file with a bitrate of 990 kbit / s and a sampling frequency of 96 kHz. In simple terms, when listening to uncompressed music files in the LDAC codec you will get a much more complete picture of the sound. In the case of the Sony WH-1000XM2, the sound at the higher frequencies is noticeably improved. This is very like the fans of good sound. However, if there is no flagship smartphone at hand, then any other one that works on Android 8.0 Oreo will do. If you remember, Oreo added support for LDAC. And if the smartphone with Oreo is missing, then the aptX HD codec is activated, which is also capable of transmitting uncompressed files, but with a lower bitrate. There is an option in the application to enable one more function – DSEE HX. This technology allows you to restore the information lost when compressed into mp3. However, catching changes in this mode is quite difficult, in addition, with the DSEE HX enabled, the battery charge is more active.
Sony also came very innovatively in its management. The right cup Sony WH-1000XM2 has a touch surface. If you drag your finger up or down on it, the volume will increase or decrease. Swipe to the right or left changes tracks and double tap puts the play on pause or resumes it. If you press one finger on the right cup and hold your finger, the Google Voice Assistant is called. After launching Google Assistant function will become very relevant. Today, you can quickly dictate a note, put an alarm clock or find out the weather without touching the smartphone. And if you cover the right cup with your hand, as if covering your ear, the headphones will automatically make the sound quieter and turn on the microphones. That is, you do not have to remove headphones to quickly talk to someone or just hear what’s going on around you. On the left side of the cup there are buttons to turn on the headphones and activate noise reduction. In addition, the power button activates the pairing mode if you hold it for 7 seconds. By the way, you can connect these wireless headphones in an old-fashioned way, or you can use NFC. It’s more convenient and faster.
Design, construction, and materials
The foldable design of the Sony WH-1000XM2 headphones makes it easy to fit in the case that comes with the headphones. Inside the cover you can find an adapter for the aircraft. And in the complete set is a micro-USB cable for charging and a long one and a half meter cable for listening to music on the wire. The cable has gold plated mini-jacks and they are both 3.5 mm. Find a replacement for a complete cable will not be difficult if anything happens to it.
The shape of the headphones is well thought out. Headband allows you to fit them under any head, and the size of cups and ear cups completely cover your ears. That is, even passive noise insulation here at a high level. The headphones are almost entirely made of various plastic – for example, on the cups it looks like rubberized, not afraid of scratches and pleasant to the touch. Headband of metal and eco-leather. From the same artificial skin are made and ear cups.
They say that Sony had problems with plastic, from which the base of the cups are made, but we have not encountered this. The plastic is strong and has no cracks. It can not be said that these are the softest wireless headphones, on the contrary, they are very clearly felt on the head and ears. After a couple of hours of listening to music, my ears are very tired. Watch a movie or series for 5-6 hours in them just will not work, especially with active noise reduction.
Well, perhaps one of the main characteristics for wireless headphones – the time of work. And then Sony could not only seriously improve these wireless headphones compared to the previous generation but made almost the most long-lasting Bluetooth headphones with noise reduction. Sony promise that the WH-1000XM2 will be able to work up to 30 hours and, you know, 25-27 hours of them to squeeze quite realistically. The operating time will depend on the level of noise reduction, volume and so on. But if the headphones have sat down, and there is no time to fully charge them, then 10 minutes of charging will allow Sony WH-1000XM2 to work 60-70 minutes. It takes 4 hours to fully charge.
So, what did we like? Good, surround sound, which can be adjusted for yourself. Support for LDAC codec not only with Sony smartphones. Excellent working time and flexible settings, as well as an intelligent system of noise reduction. And the headphones have an excellent compact case and an easily replaceable cable.
What did not you like? Sony WH-1000XM2 cannot be called the most comfortable, because after a couple of hours of wearing you want to relax a bit from them. In addition, headphones can work in headset mode, but this is clearly not their hobby. The sound in this mode is average, and audibility for the interlocutor is not the best. Well, the third disadvantage is the lack of USB-C. It may seem a little far-fetched, but when the headphones are a whole media combine, Micro USB is no longer relevant to them. In addition, Micro USB cables are gradually being disused and are not always at hand.
Sony was able to make beautiful wireless headphones with noise reduction and once again prove that they can both work with sound and love. Well, now the main thing is the price is very impressive, but if you compare Sony with the main competitor Bose QC35 of the second generation, then they cost exactly the same. There are other options like Beats Studio 3 and Parrot Zic 3, which cost a couple of thousand less. But the main battle in this segment occurs between Sony and Bose. You can safely say that the WH-1000XM2 are worth every cent and the sound is quite decent.
