Equipment and design
From the design point of view, Chuwi Hi9 is made with minimalism in mind. The presence of wide frames around the display has its own logic because it prevents accidental pressing and allows in many cases to work with one hand. The weight of the device also helps with this. Moreover, the whole assembly looks solid and well thought out. The buttons are pressed as expected, and each of the ports is conveniently located.
The back panel here does not collect fingerprints, however, it is easily scratched. The Hi9 I tested came with a few minor defects that could not be polished. This does not affect the use but spoils the aesthetic appearance. Lack of strength is another problem of assembly. This Chuwi tablet is not the most high-strength device.
During my testing, the gadget accidentally fell from a coffee table to a dense carpet, which led to a slight crack at the bottom of the display. At best, the build quality is average and involves the purchase of a protective glass and cover.
Thanks to the laminated layer, which reduces glare, the contents of the Chuwi Hi9 display can be read without problems even in bright light. However, with the initial setup, the screen stopped responding and needed a reboot. The second setup had similar problems, which disappeared after the home screen was fully loaded.
It was not quite clear, it’s a problem with the display or software. In any case, after two reboots, everything worked fine.
The Hi9 display has the best resolution in this price range and this will be noticed immediately by those who are accustomed to standard HD-displays, and the screen ratio of 16: 9 will allow using the majority of Android applications on the whole screen, without stretches or distortions.
Since this is a budget tablet, there are several obvious shortcomings in performance. When playing more intense games, noticeably some lag.
The tests show that the performance of the Chuwi Hi9 is better in something, and worse than the Samsung Galaxy S6, depending on which aspect of the SoC or GPU is measured. However, the test results almost never correspond to the results in real use.
Hi9 from Chuwi is a much more capable gadget than its specifications show and it is quite consistent with the title of “game tablet”.
The battery life of the Chuwi Hi9 is quite good. With 90% CPU usage and the screen on, the device worked for about 4.5 hours. This is an average, since a 5000 mAh battery should at least last a full day.
The brightness of the display is not high enough to significantly affect the battery life. The problem is most likely related to optimization. But, if Hi9 is not used for games or other heavy processes, it can easily work the whole day.
Charging the battery from 0% to 100% takes about 2 hours.
Connectivity and Audio
Chuwi Hi9 supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. Bluetooth 4.0 technology allows you to use a wide range of headphones and wireless headsets, almost without loss of quality. Bluetooth 4.0 also easily recognizes input signals from HID devices, like a gamepad or Bluetooth keyboard. Connection on Wi-Fi here is confident and stable.
The sound quality here is equally good as through a 3.5-mm jack, and through a speaker. The speaker on the Hi9 is quite loud, although it partially blurs the bass, as mobile and tablet hardware do not allow it to provide high-quality sound.
The problem is solved with the help of headphones, and drivers Chuwi provide a clear and rich sound.
The Chuwi Hi9 tablet runs on a clean Android 7.0 Nougat OS, with several pre-installed Google applications and a security patch from January 5, 2018. It is not known whether any future problems will be fixed with future updates with a delay at the initial login, since most Android tablets are notorious for not receiving updates.
Chuwi Hi9 Cameras
Cameras, like the software on the Chuwi Hi9, have nothing unusual. The sensors are compatible with HDR, but there are no filters and modes for recording.
The image quality is not impressive due to the low pixel level. There is no flash memory or special functions, so image processing is of poor quality and noticeably worse than on the average Android phone. Pictures with a brighter backlight are blurred.
At best, Hi9 cameras will be able to work normally only with the correct lighting, but given that this tablet, you can close your eyes to these shortcomings.
Given the low cost, it’s hard not to recommend the latest efforts of Chuwi with the Hi9 game board. There are some compromises, but they always take place on tablets with Android OS.
The clean software and the complete absence of viruses out of the box mean that Chuwi Hi9 offers a smooth and safe use. On the other hand, the lack of strength of the case and mediocre cameras indicate that this device will not be an option for everyone.
It will not be an ideal solution for those who plan to use it as a camera. Nevertheless, for those who buy a protective cover and install a protective glass, Hi9 must be on the list for review.
