A new line of smartphones in 2018 from Huawei produced a slight furor in the market. This is primarily due to the capabilities of smartphone cameras. The truth is not all three new Huawei P20 Lite, Huawei P20, and Huawei P20 Pro, and the latter and slightly less than the second. Here’s about the Huawei P20 in this review and we’ll talk.
Design and Appearance

It can not be said that the design of the Huawei P20 is outstanding. The smartphone looks great, but without claims for a work of technological art. It is compact and very convenient to use with one hand. The front and back of the smartphone is covered with glass. The choice of glass for the back cover is not due to the support of wireless charging, although such an option would add points to the smartphone. The frame of the body is aluminum. A similarity with the iPhone X is obvious, and scolding for this company is already superfluous, because so in our time marketing is arranged – if you need good sales figures, then it’s worth going along the well-trodden road. Protested Apple. There is a possibility that Huawei had constructive reasons to place the camera vertically and add a cut-out on the screen, but something tells us that everything is much simpler here. And the similarities are only in this. Otherwise, the devices are completely different.
In Huawei’s approach to design, I really want to praise them for the coloring of smartphones. We have a review of the smartphone in midnight blue and it looks very cool. At first, I did not want to look away. Huawei P20 is also available in classic black. In some regions, other colors are available.
The power and volume controls are located on the right end. The unlock button is beaten with a nice interspersing, colored red. Looks nice. Under the display is a fingerprint scanner. It may seem that this is a physical button, but it is sensory. There is no point in arguing about tastes, and someone will not even pay attention to it, but we did not like everyone in the editorial office. But its functionality at the highest level – one click performs the action backward, holding is equivalent to the home button, svaypy left or right open the running applications, svayp up launches Google Now. At the bottom, there is a USB Type-C connector for charging and symmetrical cutouts for the speaker and microphone. At the top, there is also a microphone, but on the left, there is a slot for 2 SIM-cards. There is no support for memory cards here.
One of the most controversial innovations in Huawei smartphones is the cutout at the top of the screen. At the presentation, he was proudly compared to the cutout of the iPhone X and was pleased that in the P20 line it turned out to be much less. But the cutout is easily masked in the smartphone settings. Do it or not – choose users. But it’s fair to say that third-party applications do not use the additional screen area on both sides of the cutout. And in Instagram, when viewing Stories, the cutout is hidden automatically, while the application stretches to the size of the screen itself. As a result, it turns out that the top of the icon of the author of history just remains cropped. We used a smartphone with a hidden neckline because it visually created a symmetry with the bottom of the smartphone, where you placed the multifunction button Home. Thanks to this button, you can also safely disable the on-screen control buttons, which also in many applications get a black background and visually reduce the diagonal of the display.
But the picture quality on this display is excellent. So different that the icons of many apps on the Google Play Market seem not at all optimized for high-resolution screens. Screen Huawei FullView has a diagonal of 5.8 inches and an adjustable resolution, the maximum rate of which reaches 2444 by 1080 pixels. Adjusts the resolution to conserve battery power. In the settings, you can adjust the color mode and adjust the temperature.
Speaking of sound to Huawei P20 there are no complaints at all. There is no stereo sound here when the conversational speaker is also used for media playback, but the loudness and presence of low frequencies of the single speaker of the smartphone is simply at the highest level. The smartphone allows you to clearly hear the bass! There is also an add-on from Dolby Atmos, which allows you to enable automatic mode to optimize the sound depending on the content, or manually select the playback mode for movies or music.
For the speed of the smartphone is responsible for the eight-core processor Huawei Kirin 970, in which one-half of the cores is Cortex A73 with a frequency of 2.36 GHz, and the second – Cortex A53 with a frequency of 1.8 GHz. For the graphics is responsible for the accelerator Mali-G72 MP12. Coupled with 4 GB of RAM, the smartphone very rarely thinks about the tasks that it needs to perform. Everything works quickly, as befits a flagship. In modern mobile games on the smartphone, too, you can play without worry. PUBG immediately turns on the maximum graphics settings.
The bet in the processor is made on the NPU – a separate element responsible for machine learning and artificial intelligence. But the main feature of this processor is that it has 2 coprocessors installed, which are sharpened exclusively for image processing. At IFA 2017, when the company introduced this processor, no one gave it much importance. But then, Huawei CEO Richard Yu already said that this will allow smartphones to do unsurpassed shots in low light conditions.
And turning to the camera, I must say that Yu did not deceive. The camera does make great shots in the dark. The main camera of the smartphone consists of two modules – the first color with a resolution of 12 megapixels and aperture f / 1.8, and the second monochrome (black and white) with a resolution of 20 megapixels and aperture f / 1.6. Both have a lens from Leica. There is also a very fast autofocus. Not bad works and a predictive focus, when the camera focuses on moving objects in real time. The camera is capable of taking pictures with 2x optical zoom, but this function is available only at 12MP resolution (3968 by 2967 pixels). At 20 megapixel (5120 by 3840 pixels), the zoom is no longer available.
Separately, you should pay attention to the camera in portrait mode or aperture mode, when there is a possibility of blurring the background or creating a bokeh effect. The camera understands the depth of the frame and in 9 of 10 pictures the result is excellent. Below are some examples of photos taken on the rear or main camera of the Huawei P20.
The camera also perfectly implemented the work of artificial intelligence, when it automatically chooses the most optimal shooting modes. Portrait mode, night or macro photography, nature photography, sunrises and sunsets, animals – scene recognition by the camera takes place in seconds. In this plan, there is no longer any need to go into the mode of professional photography. But the Pro mode here is still provided.
The video camera records in 4K resolution. There is also the possibility of shooting Full HD video at 60 frames per second. Image stabilization is available only with normal Full HD and below. There is support for the H.265 codec to reduce file sizes. Slow-motion shooting at 120, 240 and 960 frames per second is displayed in a separate camera function. At 960 frames per second, you get spectacular, but short video for 10 seconds. Sometimes it is difficult to catch some quick and one-time shot, but there is no problem if the subject is constantly in motion. The first such opportunity was realized in Sony smartphones, but best of all it works in Galaxy S9, because there the camera itself catches a quick action when it detects it in the lens.
The front camera has a resolution of 24 megapixels and photosensitivity is f / 2.0. The pictures are very clear. Of the features here are the effects of jewelry, which smooth and brightens the skin of the face. And also you can apply the effects of stage lighting. They, by the way, are also available for the main camera in portrait mode. It works much worse than Apple’s iPhone. In general, to make a beautiful self-portrait this camera can easily.

So, Huawei P20 – the average in the lineup device. This device really deserves to be called a flagship. The speed of the smartphone on the level. The smartphone’s working time is excellent. 3400 mAh with an energy efficient processor and moderate use is sufficient for one and a half days of continuous operation. In the loaded mode, the battery life will be a full light day. The camera allows you to make masterpieces with minimal effort and knowledge in photo and video shooting. Pleasant design and compact dimensions make the smartphone very comfortable. It is also worth noting the rapid operation of the fingerprint scanner and face recognition for unlocking. Well, the shortcomings of the display, which are currently caused more by the lack of optimization of Android 8 Oreo and individual applications under the cutout at the top, can easily be eliminated with settings.
