Motorola has recently launched its new device in its own standout Z series. Moto Z4 comes in the market with subtle changes which might entertain you but some might not. With 6.4-inch OLED display, Snapdragon 675 under the hood, a single 48MP rear camera, 3600mAh high-capacity battery, and pure Android experience, Moto Z4 finds its seat in the market at a hefty midrange price. Design and Display
Motorola Moto Z4 is a well-designed device which surely sits good and comfy in hand. The differences from the last Moto Z devices are very subtle with very little design changes. The brand has gone with a notch for the first time in Z series which makes the display better- obviously! Motorola has added Moto Mods in this device which makes the device better in usability sense. Coming to its physical specs, the device is a bit thicker than its predecessor’s which was 6.8mm thick. Moto Mods doesn’t fit in hands sometimes due to the rough size. Moto Z4 is shaped differently than its predecessor- with its long stature and narrow chassis. The device does have a 3.5mm headphone jack which is rare to see nowadays. As usual, volume rockers and lock button get their spaces on the right edge of the device. Moto Z4 is sandwiched between glass back and front with aluminium in the middle. The back doesn’t look glossy but the device sports a matte look. It won’t act as a fingerprint magnet but won’t look much classy either. Although brands are going for punch-holes and slider cameras for better screen-to-body ratios, this device has still gone with teardrop notch- that too for the first time. Moto Z4’s display is not technically too good with the less sharp screen. If you are looking for the best video quality and multimedia experience, then this device is not a banger. Moto Mods
Motorola has continued with its add-ons which you might end up using four to five times in your whole lifetime. Although some of them are very useful, but some are equally terrible as well. The gaming pad, speakers, and battery bump might come in handy for some users. But, don’t fall into Moto’s trap if you don’t need these mods.
Performance
Talking about what this device has got underneath the hood, Motorola Moto Z4 has an octa-core processor with Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 chipset. The processor is coupled with 4 gigs of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. If you are comparing this device with its predecessor itself, this device is a let-down. With Snapdragon 853, Z3 scored 6,549 on the Geekbench 4 test while Z4 scored 6,523 on the same platform. Yes, it might look that the device carries a less powerful processor but it doesn’t give you the taste of it. The device works perfectly fine and smooth with no signs of lag or any kinds of stutters. If you are criticizing this phone’s hood, the 4GB of RAM might feel outdated in 2019. Brand like Apple has still maintained the best performance stature with even 2 gigs of RAM. In Android devices, it isn’t the case. The device performs really well although which can keep you satisfied with its day-to-day performance.
Moto Z4 runs Android Pie out of the box and sooner or later it will be seeing Android Q on the phone’s step. Minimal tweaks, no ads, and less bloatware, this device gives you great user experience. If you argue about its user experience, this device will surely kick any other mid-range device. Double chop to turn on the flashlight, One Button Nav and many other features in this device give you the flavour of pure Android. The device is not an Android One device. So, it won’t see security monthly patches but pure Android experience is a great treat to have- that’s for sure.
Battery Life
Talking about battery life, Moto Z4 has a 3,600mAh high-capacity battery. Yes, this battery package is bigger and better than its predecessors’ which was 3,000mAh. The 600mAh increase in battery life might not give you a substantial increase in the battery life but the device can easily keep your device active for a full day of regular usage. If you aim for more, then Moto Mods might come in very handy for you. You can expand the battery and take it to around 4,500mAh. With this Moto Mod, you might strike the two-day push with ease. Although, your device will start weighing more- 74 grams more than its actual weight. Now, coming to the saddest part, Moto Z4 doesn’t support wireless charging. You get a Turbo Charger in the handset box with USB-C cable. Also, the device supports 15W fast charging too which adds up to the device’s pros.
Camera
Coming to the cameras, the device sports single rear camera setup on the back which might seem outdated to mass tech fans. While many smartphones have stepped up to dual-camera setups, triple-camera setups, and even quad-camera setups, Moto Z4 has stuck to a single sensor. The new device has ditched the dual camera setup of previous Z devices to make the way for single 48 megapixel snapper. Although this device has a single camera behind, still it captures better photos than Z3- thanks to its software. Google Pixel series has done it before with their single main rear camera and Moto seems to follow Google’s leads. Leaning on the software, Motorola has done a good job. Just like any other midrange smartphones, this phone is not an exception even if it relies mostly on its software. The photos captured in daylight come out really good while in low-light settings, the camera performs even better. Night Vision mode is still missing in this device which might disappoint some tech fans. Moto Z4 carries a 25MP front-facing camera which is a big upgrade over the 8MP shooter. Now comes the hardest part! Who is it for? Who is it not for? Its competitions and should you buy it or not? Kicking it off, Motorola Moto Z4 is for the ones who were waiting for a 5G device and that too at the cheaper price tag. In India, you don’t get that flavour although! It is a decent mid-range smartphone. Neither will it blow you up with positive surprises nor does it let you down. So, if you are looking for a cutting edge device with all the new gears in it, this device might not entertain you. Also, if you are looking for a stunning camera device, its single rear snapper might not ring you with all new bells. Over that, its hefty price in the midrange segment might also pull you down if you are thinking to buy it. If you are open to buying heft midrange smartphone, then Google Pixel 3a is a great choice too with a better camera, smooth software, pure Android experience, and just at the same price. Moto Z4 is a decent and awesome all-rounder with a hefty price which will be easily lost in the crowd.
