When we hear the name Huawei Mate, we immediately imagine a large-sized gadget with a large screen and flagship stuffing. Well, in the case of this smartphone, all this is even more appropriate than before. The company has long sought to break away from the status of the Chinese brand with all the ensuing consequences and to become one of the world’s most famous manufacturers of flagship devices. Did Huawei do this by releasing Mate 10 Pro – read in our review?
Contents of delivery
Traditional packaging for Huawei flagships: a box of quality black cardboard with the name of the model, derived in golden letters. Also, there is the logo of Leica, together with which a dual camera and image processing algorithms are developed.
Open the lid.
Package: smartphone, power adapter, USB-Type-C cable, Type-C wired headset, silicone case, adapter for an audio connector, key for insertion with SIM cards.
Adapter for normal headphones.
Appearance and features
In the design of the smartphone, on the one hand, there are no special highlights, but in general, the device produces a very good and stylish impression.
The left-right display frame is only one millimeter.
The front part is covered with 3D glass – unlike 2.5D, where a single piece of glass is chamfered, it consists of several glasses with curved edges.
That’s how it was shown in the presentation.
The bottom face is called HUAWEI – and this for some reason causes a serious “poplar” in certain observers, some of which are splashing saliva on this occasion in all directions. I honestly do not understand the reasons for this. Well, they brought the name of the company – and they did it. It does not irritate me at all.
The display has a protective film that does not cause a desire to remove it immediately: it is glued qualitatively and has a good oleophobic coating, which, however, is inferior to the oleophobic coating of the protective glass. Also, the film is quite easy to scratch, so I, after putting a scratch on it for a couple of weeks of use, took the film all the same.
The ends are made of metal, the back cover is also covered with a 3D-glass, the layers of which beautifully shimmer in the sun, but their fingers are clogged very quickly.
A dual camera unit with a flash and laser autofocus, beneath it, is a fingerprint scanner. In a couple of reviews, I read that during the testing of a smartphone the journalist, with his finger, instead of the scanner, got on the lower camera lens – I never did it once: apparently, the finger is not so long.
At the bottom, there is a microphone, a USB-C port, and holes above the speaker.
On the right side, there is a power button and a volume rocker made of metal. The power button has a special notch so that it can be distinguished by touch from the volume rocker. The stroke of the buttons is elastic and quite distinct.
At the top, there is a microphone for noise reduction and an IR sensor.
On the left side – an insert for two cards nanoSIM.
Included in the kit silicone case – very, you know, is not superfluous. The appearance of spoils very slightly, the smartphone becomes noticeably more grippy, the back cover does not get trapped – in general, only with it a smartphone and use it.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro was equipped with a 6-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 18: 9. It is made using AMOLED technology with FHD + resolution (402 ppi). There is support for HDR10, on the device, you can view HDR content from Amazon Prime, for example.
Support for HDR also makes it clear that the screen of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro is very contrasting and bright. In terms of the combination of qualities, the Mate 10 Pro screen is one of the best smartphones I’ve tested. I do not know what AMOLED generation is here and how far on the paper it lags behind the screens in Samsung’s flagships, but the picture feels no worse than the Galaxy Note 8 or S8.
If you look at the Mate 10 Pro screen at an angle, it’s easy to see the green tint, but it’s a birth disease of all AMOLED screens.
It’s good that Huawei did not chase after permission, limiting FHD +. This has had a beneficial effect on the time of work, and the eye is still unnoticeable, how many there are PPI – 402 or 602. Without bringing the screen straight to the nose, you will not be able to find some kind of fuzziness in the fonts. If you are not superman, of course.
Camera Huawei Mate 10 Pro – this is one of those parameters, because of which you want to run for this device in the store. In the DXOmark camera rating, the Mate 10 Pro got 97 points, which puts it higher than the Galaxy Note 8 and HTC U11. And I do not see a single argument for doubt.
The bunch of 12 Mp (RGB) + 20 Mp (monochrome) was finally brought to mind. Here, there is a dual ISP processor for image processing, and an embedded neural network, which guesses plots in real time. This allows you to more accurately set shooting parameters in auto mode. In the manual mode, the neural network will not work.
Especially pleasing is the luminous optics – F / 1.6 in both cameras, compared to F / 2.2 in the Huawei Mate 9 camera. This also greatly improved the quality of the images, especially in low light conditions.
In general, Huawei Mate 10 Pro has the best main camera in the history of the Chinese company. It can definitely be crammed into the top 5 best mobile cameras – Google Pixel 2, iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, HTC U11 and Mate 10 Pro. Huawei P20 Pro And we must understand that Huawei is not an outsider on this list.
Camera Comparision between Huawei Mate 10 Pro & One Plus 5T
In modern smartphones, there is such a wonderful thing – automatic HDR. It is useful when the user does not catch up, whether it is necessary to include HDR for a particular scene or not. Unfortunately, Auto HDR is still not implemented in Huawei smartphones. There is only ON and OFF, besides the switch is not at hand – you need to climb into the camera menu.
In any case, the HDR mode is quite good. However, it’s far from Google’s HDR +.
It’s great that Huawei did not become cunning and call this option “optical zoom”. The fact is that here both modules received identical lenses – 27 mm with aperture f / 1.6. The telephoto lens is not there, accordingly, any approach of the object is accompanied by a serious loss in quality. It is worth forgetting about this function once and for all.
The second camera Huawei Mate 10 Pro received a resolution of 20 megapixels versus 12 megapixels in the main. In addition, the sensor removes exclusively black and white images.
Why this is not necessary, I find it difficult to answer, because there is no special advantage here. Below is a pair of 100 percent crop of two photos: on the left, the frame is taken at a resolution of 12 megapixels per RGB module, and on the right is a 20-megapixel image taken on a monochrome sensor.
8 megapixel, fixed focus, aperture f / 2.0 – everything here is in order. But the breakthrough shooting on the front camera still cannot be called. Selfi is good quality, good, but not better.
Despite one front module, the camera can blur the background. She does it programmatically and not very well.
Huawei Mate 10 Pro runs on Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box. This, by the way, means support for Project Treble, which in turn should give faster firmware updates in the future.
Visually EMUI 8.0 based on Android 8.0 Oreo is very similar to EMUI 5.0 on Android 7.0 Nougat. Here, too, a lot of branded applications and the notorious notification curtain, which is a compartment with lurid icons makes the new shell very similar to the previous version.
But there are positive improvements – added Google Now in the far left window (finally), as well as all the technical changes to the standard Android 8.0 Oreo (notifications, picture in picture, shortcuts, autocomplete data in any applications, and more).
Using Huawei Mate 10 Pro for two weeks, I caught myself thinking that the firmware was much closer to the stock Android. It seems that everything is familiar on EMUI 5.0, but there are all the significant innovations of Android 8.0 Oreo. We can say that the proprietary shell of Huawei has become more mature.
I almost forgot to mention the analog DeX from Samsung. Huawei decided to join this race but forgot to present an accessory or dock for easy connection to the monitor. Because of this, I did not manage to tolerate the desktop mode Mate 10 Pro. According to reviews on the Web, this case is not working as hot as, even against Samsung.
Performance and running time
At the core of Huawei Mate 10 Pro is the Kirin 970, the most advanced and powerful chipset of the Chinese company. This is the first NPU (mobile processor with special blocks for processing AI computations) in the smartphone market. Here, Huawei jumped above their heads – they created not only a 10-nm chipset without the help of Qualcomm or Samsung, but also provided it with unique capabilities that competitors do not have. Read more about Kirin 970 in this material.
The speed of the Kirin 970 is at the level of Snapdragon 835 or Exynos 8895. This is the flagship solution, which will suffice for the coming years without any restrictions. In real use, there may be difficulties with individual applications or games, the developers of which are slow to optimize their masterpieces for the features of the Kirin 970. sales of Huawei say that soon the company can become number two in the smartphone market. Therefore, worried about the Kirin 970 is not worth it, Huawei was able to prove the seriousness of their intentions in terms of creating mobile processors.
Autonomy and its measurements – this is a very subjective point in the review of any smartphone. Comparing the running time of Mate 10 Pro with its predecessor Mate 9 or with P10 Plus, I can say that the new flagship of Huawei lives longer, not drastically, but really long.
On average, the smartphone showed 5-5.5 hours of on screen or about 30 hours without recharging. To do this, you need to put dark (preferably black) wallpaper and a dark theme in the settings menu.
Interface and Reliability
- Works on Android 8.0 Oreo
- Sends the desktop when connected to the monitor
Emotion UI or EMUI 8.0 is Huawei’s user interface, which is located on top of the latest version of Android 8, also known as Oreo. This immediately provides the Huawei Mate 10 Pro an advantage over most devices with Android 7.
This means that in addition to all applications available through the Google Play Store, Mate 10 Pro includes the latest security fixes and advanced user interface features from full-scale notification panel notifications that perfectly reflect things like Spotify Album Art, to the picture-in-picture mode picture “for joint video applications.
Huawei greatly expands the capabilities of Google. For starters, there is no default tray for applications. If you want to enable it, you must go into the settings and activate the function.
The rest of the user interface remains the same as in the factory Android – a variable number of home screens, the Google screen on the left and a notification tray that can be pulled from above, but go a little deeper and open much more.
If you want to add another button to the navigation controls, completely hide them, change the screen color calibration, add gestures, replace the main theme, there are hundreds of settings and themes available on the basis of Huawei.
Huawei also connects with PC experience when you connect Mate 10 Pro to a monitor or TV, following the decision of Samsung DeX. The key difference from the experience of Huawei, known as EMUI Desktop, is that it needs a USB-C-HDMI cable for connection, we used a proprietary adapter from Moshi that worked perfectly, so there is no need for expensive, patented docking station, a la DeX.
In fact, the interface EMUI early break into the PC, it seems half-ready for those who are serious about the performance of desktop computers, but the fact that this technology is already here and implemented using the USB-C port is a good bonus.
Now you do not need to dive into the huge number of options available to Huawei, you still have a great time with Mate 10 Pro, considering that everything works smoothly and very stable, but, like with the camera’s user interface, the degree of customization makes the Mate 10 Pro excellent a device for experienced craftsmen.
Communication and Sound
With communication and quality of communication, the flagships of Huawei never had problems. Mate 10 Pro here did not blunder, on the contrary, it showed itself from the best side. The smartphone, in theory, is capable of providing speeds of up to 1.2 Gbit / s due to the new modem in the Kirin 970. In terms of quality of communication, to match with Huawei Mate 10 Pro, few can.
With sound, everything is simpler, but also not bad. Mate 10 Pro received high-quality stereo speakers, which, if they can not compete with the speakers of HTC U11, they are very close to them.
The sound in the headphones could not really be assessed – Huawei decided to abandon the 3.5-mm connector. And with wireless headphones, all smartphones except Sony play plus or minus the same.
Movies, music, and games
- Movies look great on the screen 18: 9, HDR10;
- Stereo speakers are loud, but not the best;
Although you can see the characteristics of the screen Huawei Mate 10 Pro and think – “Full HD? Hmm, that’s not enough! “, But in fact, it surpasses some of its competitors with QHD.
6-inch Mate 10 Pro is equipped with an OLED-panel with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Let’s explain, before you widescreen Full HD, thanks to which the number of pixels goes one level with the iPhone 8 Plus.
Moreover, the quality of the OLED panel is very high, complete with support for HDR10 in software and hardware. As a result, the display demonstrates the movies stunningly, bypassing even the harsh Google Pixel 2 XL.
And while you’re probably looking towards Amazon Prime Video or Netflix in search of HDR content sources, if you upload your own HDR video, Mate 10 Pro will immediately come to life, showing incredibly deep colors.
The games also look great, with lots of titles optimized to support the 18: 9 aspect ratio. The combination of the Kirin 970 chipset and 6 GB of RAM means that the smartphone can play any game you play on it, and thanks to the stereo speakers, regardless of whether you use headphones or not, you can not completely block the sound during the game.
Add an excellent stock of 128 GB of memory here, and you will not be puzzled by finding an extra place to download even the biggest games.
And while the Huawei Mate 10 Pro speakers are good and offer loudness, they are not the best on the market. Of course, Mate 10 Pro offers two speakers and emulates a stereo effect, but offers something similar to Google Pixel 2 and Huawei Mate 9.
As for the sound quality in the headphones, the USB-C adapter still does a decent job of playing music with good quality, although the lack of a headphone jack will irritate many. Huawei also did not confirm whether the headphone adapter will be shipped with the device, so check with the seller before purchasing.
The technology of LDAC from Sony is really useful here. It allows you to use a higher-quality Bluetooth sound in those cases where the adapter is unnecessarily large, the solution works.
Inside is a battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh. This is an average figure, but given the good software optimization, the smartphone will easily last one light day on a single charge. The time of glowing off the screen with the displayed auto brightness is an average of 4.5 hours.
Supports branded fast charging SuperCharge. It charges the device with a current of up to 5 amperes (at 4.5 volts). In real life, all this is converted to 60% of the charge in only the first half hour, for 1 hour the smartphone is charged by 90%, and the full capacity of “accumulator” dials in 1 hour 25 minutes. In this case, Huawei boasts that their charging type is one of the safest in the measure, repeatedly tested in the laboratory and all that stuff. Willingly I believe!
- Large battery for 4000 mAh;
- Long working time and fast charging;
Thanks to a 4000 mAh battery inside the Mate 10 Pro, the smartphone offers more battery power than any of the competitors.
Now much affects the longevity of the battery, in addition to mAh. These factors include the chipset, software optimization, and even third-party background applications.
Early rumors about the Mate 10 Pro battery were negative, stating that he was struggling for a full day of work.
But Huawei responded quickly, however, releasing the software update just 24 hours after the release of the smartphone, leading to what can be described as the difference between day and night. The Huawei Mate 10 Pro boasts a battery life that matches the leaders in the class.
The screen fits perfectly into the energy saving program. Even during casual games, watching movies, connecting to Wi-Fi, the phone is very comfortable.
Meanwhile, if you are a moderate user, more focused on random emails and newsfeed updates, and also disconnect your smartphone during sleep, there is every chance that you will be able to stretch the Mate 10 Pro for the entire second day – and this is without power-saving modes, offered by Huawei.
This is unheard of in the current flagship climate: iPhone 8 Plus, Galaxy Note 8 and Google Pixel 2 XL does not have an opportunity to work two full days, which makes battery life one of the strongest aspects of Mate 10 Pro.
In our battery tests, including the continuous playback of HD video with full brightness and active Wi-Fi, Huawei Mate 10 Pro lost only 9% of the battery in 90 minutes, which puts the smartphone above any other flagship smartphone at the moment (Galaxy S8 Plus lost 11%, LG V30 13%, Galaxy S8 left 23%, like the iPhone 8 Plus, also 23%).
This is not surprising if you know that a 4000 mAh battery is the biggest among them – but there is an important point, improving the performance of the battery, which is more important than capacity. We are pleased to know that the results in the real world correspond to the stated characteristics of the phone.
This excellent battery life also involves fast charging, thanks to Huawei’s own Super Charge technology. This means that in half an hour of charging you will get over 50% of the energy, which makes the Mate 10 Pro very competitive.

For whom is Huawei Mate 10 Pro?
Mate 10 Pro is designed for photo enthusiasts who really like to tinker with their technology. If you fall into this category of users, the smartphone promises you joy and pleasure.
You can spend hours testing all modes of the camera, figuring out which combination of screen colors, navigation and navigation works for you, tinker with the EMUI interface until it meets your needs.
On the other hand, if you are looking for a simple interface without unnecessary fanfare, the Mate 10 Pro will probably blow up your habits, despite the overall style and appeal.
Worth to buy Huawei Mate 10 Pro?
Yes. If you are looking for an excellent smartphone in all directions, do not mind the lack of a headphone jack or microSD slot, and do not want to pay for the iPhone and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
A premium design will appeal to most users. If you need a flashy smartphone, use it without a cover, Huawei is able to offer shine and style no worse than any other flagship on the market.
If you are looking for something more durable, the moisture resistance and the case from the box offer you the confidence that the smartphone will not bend under pressure.
Review Huawei Mate 10 Pro: purchase, conclusions
The flagship smartphone Huawei Mate 10 Pro is able to attract the attention of not only fans of this brand, but also fans of mobile innovation. First of all, this is due to the promising capabilities of the new processor, in which the neural computing module is integrated. Only after hearing that “this is not a smartphone, but a sensible machine”, I already want to “twist” the device myself.
However, even forgetting for a while the sprouts of artificial intelligence, in the stuffing of the device, the case of which is protected by IP67, it is worth noting the bright HDR-screen with small frames, double camera Leica with high light and optical stabilization, fast certified charging Huawei SuperCharge, NFC interface, and also a fresh version of Android with an updated fork.
There were, however, no shortcomings. The glass case of the novelty was predictably branded, and the built-in, although very large, storage is not expanded by microSD cards. In addition, the smartphone lacks a 3.5-mm headphone connector.
The smartphone is available already in November at a price of About 650 EUR
