Comparison of Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 +

Design Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 +

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and S8 + screens with minimal framing, which occupy almost the entire front panel and give them a futuristic look – Infinity Display. Both phones have a combination of glass and metal, but the S8 + with curved edges is better felt in the hand.

Because of Infinity Display, the screen is more likely to crack when it falls. Fingerprint scanners for these two devices have been moved to the back side, so they are harder to press without looking.

As it should be for premium-class smartphones, Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 + have a degree of protection IP68 – they will survive without any problems even immersion under water. But, Note 8 has a water-resistant S Pen, so you can leave notes even in the pool.

On the sides of the two compared phones are the usual volume and power buttons, as well as the Bixby virtual assistant key, which is often pressed by mistake.

Here is a comparative table of sizes

Smartphone Dimensions The weight
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 162.5 × 74.8 × 8.6 mm. 195
Samsung Galaxy S8 + 159.5 × 73.4 × 8.1 mm. 173 g.

Displays of flagships

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Samsung Galaxy S8 + have bright AMOLED-displays with excellent image detail and resolution of 2960 × 1440 pixels.

By default, the supported format is 1080p, which saves battery power more economically. For many users, this is enough, and disgruntled people will be able to change the resolution in the settings to the maximum.

There are several display modes, if not satisfied with the standard, in Basic Mode you will get increased color accuracy. The image on the Galaxy S8 + and Note 8 is visible even on a sunny day, and the Night Mode.

The proprietary Always-on Display function is always on, it allows you to learn about the current time and received notifications without unlocking. HDR-video is supported on both smartphones.

Software

Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 + have almost identical software – the interface from Samsung over the Android Nougat OS. But, only Note 8 has S Pen, which allows you to draw, write notes, make captions in photos and navigate when S8 + does not interact with the stylus.

Note 8 also provides shortcuts for quick launching of applications through the Edge Panel, which is especially convenient in multitasking mode. The rest of the functions do not differ: navigational screen keys are configured, there are themes of the user interface, a virtual assistant Bixby is installed. In addition to using a fingerprint scanner, a face or an iris can be scanned to enter the system.

Samsung’s user interface, combining the messaging application, on-screen keyboard, and YouTube video, when multitasking is enabled.

Performance and RAM

Both smartphones are equipped with Snapdragon 835 – the most powerful processor at the moment. But, Galaxy Note 8 has 6 GB of RAM, when the S8 + has only 4 GB of RAM. In theory, the amount of RAM depends on the speed of starting and switching between applications, in practice and in daily work it is invisible.

The last 10 open programs remain in memory both Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy S8 + for quick access.

The performance is affected by open applications and smartphone settings. In any case, Note 8 is the best choice for demanding users.

64 GB of internal memory will be enough for many, which is normal for phones of this class. This is enough to store a lot of photos and 4K-video. MicroSD memory cards are supported.

The dual camera on Samsung smartphones is also designed like the iPhone 7 – it’s a basic 12-megapixel sensor and a telephoto lens with a double zoom that brings the image closer without compromising on quality. Supports the bokeh effect, blurring the background around the object in focus.

But, the S8 + has only one 12-megapixel camera, almost no different from the main one on Note 8. Live Focus mode in the application is not available, the phone also does not have a 2x zoom.

On both smartphones, the cameras have many modes and controls, the most commonly used ones. For beginners, the user interface from Samsung will be uncommon at first.

The quality of the received images on the Galaxy Note 8 is higher than in S8 +, despite the identical hardware, and the updated application provides better clarity and detail. Good photos are obtained in any light, but sometimes the colors are too bright. The optical zoom on Note 8 is expected to outperform digital on the Galaxy S8 +, especially during daytime photography.

These two smartphones have the same 8-megapixel front camera with autofocus and HDR mode, making good self, even when there is not enough light.

Supports shooting video in a resolution of up to 4K, frames are detailed and saturated, although the picture and sound on Note 8 is better than on S8 +. Autofocus is fast for both flagships.

The battery is more quickly restored if you charge it through the adapter or compatible device that comes with the kit, both phones support wireless charging.
